Brighton soul singer Cedric Neal is through to The Voice semi-finals after a tense battle to join fellow Sussex contestant Jimmy Balito.

The 44-year-old, who lives in Patcham Windmill, sang the classic Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.

At the end of his performance, the audience were up on their feet and shouted to his coach, Sir Tom Jones, to pick Cedric to progress to the next round.

Before singing, Cedric said he has a strong connection with the song.

Two other coaches, Jennifer Hudson and Will.i.am, threw both of their shoes and even their notebooks on the stage - a clear sign that Cedric's performance has earned a place in their hearts.

Will.i.am said: "You are really gifted."

Jennifer added: "I've never heard that song done like that before. It was so pure."

Fellow coach Olly Murs said: "I didn't blink because I didn't want to miss anything. There was a real emotional connection you have with the song."

Sir Tom said: "To me, it was just perfect and I defy anyone to sing that song any better than you did."

Cedric said: "I feel blessed. It was the perfect song for a perfect time in my life. I feel grateful."

Sir Tom chose Cedric over Bethzienna Williams, who sang River by Bishop Briggs, and Ayanam Udoma who sang Thunder by Imagine Dragons.

The soul singer has joined fellow Sussex singer, Jimmy Balito, in the semi-finals.

The 23-year-old, who is from Pulborough, sang High and Dry by Radiohead in last Saturday's show. He is in team Olly.

The semi-final line-up is now complete with Sussex having two contestants in the final eight.

Both Cedric and Jimmy are being heavily tipped to win.

The Voice is back on ITV at 8pm on Saturday.
