A CARE HOME has been ordered to improve when officials found accidents were not managed after a resident suffered a series of falls.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors also reported there was insufficient management of the risk of infection.

They graded Camowen care home, in Parkfield Road, Worthing, an overall “requires improvement”.

It was asked to improve on safety, effectiveness and leadership. However, its other two key services, caring and responsiveness, were rated as good.

The report, which was published on Friday, said: “Insufficient action had been taken in the prevention and control of infection. Some people had recently been unwell, so people were encouraged to stay in their rooms rather than meet in communal areas.

“One person said ‘we are confined to our rooms because there is a tummy bug going round’.

“Risks to people were not always safely managed. One person had sustained 11 falls between October 2018 and February 2019, one of which had resulted in a serious injury.

“No referral was made to the local authority falls team for advice on how to manage the person’s risk of falls.

“According to the person’s care record, they were assessed as being at low risk of falls in a risk assessment dated October 15, 2018. This was inaccurate information.

“This risk assessment should have been reviewed and updated following the falls.”

In the last inspection, which took place in August 2016, officials graded the care home an overall “Good” grading.

In latest inspections, officials found there are sufficient staff levels and residents feel safe under their care. One resident said in the report: “I feel safe because there are locks and keypads on all the entrances and exits, even the garden gate.”

Staff members reported they are clear about their roles. Residents have praised the quality of care they have received.

One person said: “The manager does lots of work in her office and is approachable”

A spokeswoman for the care home said: “At Camowen, we strive to provide the highest, most compassionate quality of care possible.

“We are extremely disappointed by the outcome of the CQC inspection which we believe is not reflective of the service and the care we provide.

“We have already taken immediate steps to address the issues raised in the report.

“We have always had Good CQC reports and we are committed to regain our Good rating as soon as possible.”
