A DISABLED woman is fed up with getting dog poo on her wheelchair – and then all over her hands.

Ali Gibbs, 31, from Whitehawk in Brighton, said she regularly wheels through dog faeces by accident when she is on a day out with her 14-month-old daughter.

Ms Gibbs, who has cerebral palsy, has to wheel herself around if she’s not with a carer or her partner and often returns home with dog poo on her hands.

She said: “I know people probably don’t think about wheelchair users in this situation, and I don’t expect them to, but I feel like I need to say that it makes life very difficult.

“I can’t just get out and clean it.

“I’m now a parent too and carry my baby daughter in a sling.

“I can’t stand up while carrying her so I have no choice but to bring the wheelchair inside with the poo still on it.

“I also then have to struggle and try not to touch her.

“Life is hard enough.”

The poo gets everywhere, according to Ms Gibbs, who has to wheel herself with her hands.

She said: “I know there’s no need to be hyper germ conscious with babies, I am fine if it’s just a bit of mud, but dog poo isn’t really OK.”

Her disability means it is difficult for her to clean the faeces – and she said wet wipes do not do the job adequately.

She said: “I can’t just kick it off my shoe or leave it to dry and deal with it in the morning.

“I have to wheel it to the bath and take it apart and clean it.

“It can take me hours if I don’t have my partner there to help because I physically can’t stand up and walk around properly.

“Someone suggested using wet wipes, but you still don’t really want to eat your picnic if you’ve just had dog s*** on your hands, even if you’ve used wet wipes. It’s the kind that just lingers for ages.”

Ms Gibbs said many dog owners seemed to pick up their pet’s mess – but then leave the bag hanging on the nearest tree or kick into the grass to the side of the path.

She said: “Everyone deserves a nice space to walk around outside.

“I don’t understand why people hang the poos on trees. Who are they expecting to clean up after them?

“It’s disgusting to see.

“You wouldn’t go to the skip for a day out – why destroy the places where people love to walk?”

Ms Gibbs owns a cat and said she feels bad someone has to clean out the litter tray but that comes with having a pet.

She said: “I know it’s disgusting, but if you buy a dog you must know that picking up its poo is part of the deal.

“I just think it’s a shame people aren’t thinking about the consequences and I feel I need to say something about it for those that have to deal with it in a different and more difficult way and it might make some think twice next time.”

Ms Gibbs posted about the dilemma online and drew a positive response from many people.

Brighton resident Rebecca Harry Harradine said: “No one should have to clean off dog poo from wheelchairs, buggies, shoes, dog paws. It’s disgusting.

“If your dog does a poo pick it up. It’s really not difficult and there’s no excuses.

“I’ve got two dogs by the way so I know how easy it is.”
