ALBION fans could still get their hands on a cup... if plans to ditch plastic get the go-ahead.

Brighton and Hove Food Partnership organised an event at the Amex and invited food and drink firms to discuss ways to cut the use of plastic cups.

One idea that was presented at the conference was for a “Brighton Cup” that would be reusable in venues across the city for a deposit.

Among the 80 businesses attending was Brighton and Hove Albion, where chief executive Paul Barber said the club is exploring ways to ditch plastic.

He said: “We continue to examine every part of our business to make sure we’re doing our bit to make our fans proud of us.

“We have already made steps to reduce single-use plastics at the stadium, replacing plastic stirrers and cutlery with wooden alternatives, removing drinking straws and switching to biodegradable options at our stadium and training ground.

“Our aim is to work with our various suppliers to reduce this further with an aim of eventually removing all single-use plastic.”

The partnership’s project manager Chloe Clarke said plastics in the ocean has been a growing public concern.

She said: “It was fabulous to see the enthusiasm at this event – and in particular businesses really running with the idea of a reusable Brighton Cup.

“There are a few key things that most businesses can do to make a significant difference by following the waste mantra: remove and reduce, promote reuse, and recycle.”
