THE A29 was closed this afternoon after a horror smash ended with one car on top of another.

Bognor Road was shut in the Warnham area after the incident which happened just north of the Marches Road junction.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police received a call at 5.37pm on Sunday to reports of a six car crash on the A29 Bognor Road. 

"Two drivers were taken to hospital, one with minor injuries and the second with serious injuries. 

"The road was closed southbound until 8.25pm."

Ambulance services were called to the scene.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) spokesman said: "At 5.40pm on Sunday we sent two cars, three ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to a five car road traffic collision.

"One car had rolled and a patient was trapped inside.

"Our HART team assisted fire services in releasingthe patient.

"Two patients were taken to East Surrey Hospital and one to St Richard’s. I do not have any details of age, sex or injuries.

Northbound traffic was diverted along Northlands Road while police, paramedics and the fire brigade attended.

Horsham Police said at 8.30pm: "A29 Bognor Road is now cleared of debris and reopened.

"Thanks for your patience with the diversions, and thanks also to several kind community members who offered and who gave us support, much appreciated."

A crew from Crawley fire station was among those at the scene.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to assist emergency services with a crash involving five vehicles in Bognor Road, Broadbridge Heath at 5.42pm yesterday afternoon.

"Two engines and a heavy rescue vehicle attended.

"On arrival, crews worked to extract one person reported trapped in one of the vehicles.

"They were released and handed into the care of SECAmb. Crews continued to make the scene safe, and we left at 6.47pm."
