AN ANNUAL summer carnival in under threat of being axed if funds cannot be raised to keep it going.

The Kemp Town Carnival is a popular event in Brighton which draws thousands of people to the streets for a big party.

The event is booked to return on June 1 this year but doubt has been cast as to how much longer it will be able to continue.

Backing for the carnival has been received from Arts Council England and Brighton Palace Pier.

But organisers believe more funding is needed to ensure it continues into 2020 and beyond.

Mat Cooke, creative director of the event, said: “The Kemp Town Carnival continues to be run by the community for the community and ultimately the event only takes place with the express wishes and consent of the residents, community stakeholders, local businesses and people of Kemp Town village.

“The carnival team is working very hard to see the event return on a yearly basis and for it to remain Brighton’s largest free community carnival celebrating our talented and diverse city.

“Myself and all involved would like to thank Kemp Town Village residents, churches, community groups and arts organisations for their continued support for the event.”

A crowdfunding page has been set up for the public to donate to the carnival and make sure it returns next year. Matt said; “All the money raised via our crowdfunder will help to fund the stages, artists, staff and vital core infrastructure at this year’s carnival and to ensure it can continue running in the future.”

There are many other rewards on offer for people who support the crowdfunder.

These range from carnival postcards and T-shirts, to poster art and a digital album of some of Brighton’s most talented band and musicians.

Another of the rewards on offer is the “parade participation” package which confirms entry for a group of up to four people into the Kemp Town Carnival parade.

You will be able to dance and prance along with a samba band through the heart of Kemp Town in your most colourful attire.
