MORE than ten drivers and pedestrians were caught jumping a red light at a level crossing.

Police officers watched as one person even ignored the warning while on their phone.

Special constable Ryan Seibel said: “Yesterday we ran a joint op with British Transport Police and Sussex Specials targeting those who jump red lights at level crossings.

“With an Automatic Number Plate Recognition van and officers on site we reported more than ten drivers and pedestrians for red light offences, including one on their phone.

“Red means stop.”

Officers said the operation was largely successful.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “This was part of Operation Leapfrog – a joint operation with British Transport Police to raise awareness and target offenders going through red and amber lights at level crossings.

“Checks were carried out by Sussex Police and British Transport Police volunteers in Worthing, Shoreham and Angmering on Friday and a number of motorists were reported for offences.

“Strong words of advice were also given to some pedestrians and cyclists.

“Members of the public were happy to engage with officers and the operation received a lot of positive feedback.”
