IN MOST cases, I have huge admiration for the frequent letters penned to your pages by Spencer Carvil as they represent the common sense views of a born and bred local.

Sadly though, Spencer, I cannot say the same of your latest contribution (Argus Letters, Tuesday, April 16), as it is both muddled and inaccurate and, with great respect, gives the impression of unfair bias towards the current Labour administration.

Your letter rightly claims that disastrous decisions have been imposed upon our poor city by the leaders of all the political parties so far elected to office and yes, you’re right to also point out that insufficient thought was put into the planning of the Brighton Centre prior to its opening by then Labour Prime Minister, James Callaghan, in 1977.

Where you’re wrong, Spencer, is when it comes to the Albion. As I recall, Mike Bamber did not wish to expand the Goldstone Ground, claiming that there was insufficient space and instead, wished to relocate to either Toad’s Hole Valley or Shoreham Airport.

I knew Mike at the time and suggested that, as he already owned several houses in Goldstone Lane, opposite the East Terrace, surely he and his co-directors could find the wherewithal to purchase the rest plus the road itself from Hove Borough Council and then, subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents, level the lot and build a massive new stadium befitting a top flight club.

Sadly, Mike then came up with the preposterous idea of sharing a brand new stadium near Gatwick Airport with, of all people, Crystal Palace.

Mike was then replaced as chairman by Bryan Bedson of the Grange Press in Southwick who subsequently sold out to Greg Stanley of the Fads Homestores chain.

He then installed the detested duo of Bill Archer as chairman and former Lib Dem MP for Eastbourne, David Belotti, as chief executive.

It was this trio between them who sold the Goldstone Ground from under the noses of the fans, as reported exclusively at the time by The Argus. Not, Spencer, Dick Knight, whose only sin was rescuing the club, after a hard-fought and long-drawn-out battle.

Now on to your aptly described: “£35 million fiasco of a doughnut on a stick.” Please don’t blame the Labour Party for this, Spencer, it was, to coin a phrase, the ruling Greens what done it (yes, the very ones who never cease whining about Government cuts leading to reduced council services.

Just wait until we all have to repay that £35 million plus, along with the majority of their Tory opposition collaborators, who really should have known better. There were, however, several Tories who, to their credit, voted against the wretched thing.

In conclusion, Labour won the last local election primarily through their former leader, Warren Morgan’s, twin promises to scrap the insane Valley Gardens scheme and to get “Back To Basics” regarding refuse, recycling, graffiti and street cleanliness.

This same man was forced from office by his own colleagues through his abysmal failure on the latter pledge and sadly, his replacement, Councillor Dan Yates, in my opinion a most competent man in most respects, has condemned his administration to death as a result of continuing with an even worse version of the former, in total contradiction to the 2015 Manifesto pledge of Councillor Morgan who is now planning to hop aboard the EU gravy train in the event of May elections to that discredited body, only this time as a candidate for the newly-formed Centrist political party.

So, Spencer, in these challenging and dangerous political times, with so many lies, mistruths and insults being hurled around with such reckless abandon, would you not agree that it is incumbent upon all those of us who are involved in the democratic process to strictly adhere, at all times, to the facts, and also, to endeavour to be as polite and respectful to one another as possible? No more yaboo politics, please.
