A MOTHER and son scooted hundreds of miles as part of an Easter adventure.

Katie Elfer, 36, and Finley Elfer, 11, from Hove, rode for hours each day, stopping at campsites to rest as they made their way home from Amsterdam.

The duo completed nearly 200 miles, hopping along through the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern France on their giant scooters, which look like bikes without pedals.

Marketing manager Katie said it was a chance to bond and said they worked together as a team to navigate their way back.

She said Finley, a pupil at the Bilingual School in Hove got his scooter about a year ago.

But they had problems working out how to transport them and how to pack their luggage for the week-long trip.

They had planned to ride to Amsterdam and fly back but instead flew out then raced back as fast as they could to reach their ferry.

There was a minor hiccup when they realised they were 12 miles short of the port of Dunkirk, by which point Katie admits they were both already exhausted.

She said: “On a scooter it is so much slower, about six miles per hour, but you get to see so much more.

“After getting his scooter, Fin has become a bit obsessive with it, and we thought it would be brilliant to be able to take it off road.

“We found out there are championships in the Czech Republic and Finland, and that was what appealed.”

Finley said: “My best bit was probably finding the ferry terminal at the end and scooting past all the massive lorries.

“The morning was tough because mum had miscalculated the distance and we had an extra 20 kilometres to squeeze in that day.

“It meant skipping lunch and racing the whole way through. We got there with just 15 minutes to spare.

“When we arrived on the boat she bought me a ginger beer and a big slice of rainbow cake though so I totally forgive her. We’ve had an awesome adventure together.”

They arrived back at Dover on Good Friday, and are already eager to attempt another journey.

Katie said: “Going with your child is a bit terrifying – I was worried about navigating the routes, busy roads, losing stamina and blisters. We made a pact that we’d support one another.

“Fin has massively impressed me and I couldn’t have had a better partner for the ride. I’m so proud of him. It’s been an exhilarating adventure that we’ll never forget.”
