Brighton Fringe: Guy Lloyd - Radio Blah Blah

Three and a half stars

The Blockhouse @ The Warren, Brighton, Tuesday, May 7

ANYBODY who knows former Juice FM radio DJ Guy Lloyd will know that he loves two things; entertaining people, and himself.

This show fulfils both of Guy’s loves in one hour of creative comedy and self-deprecating documentary.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Guy was the face of Juice radio in Brighton for 13 years, by the end of the station’s run - after it was shut down by Global Radio following a buyout - Guy was the most popular voice on the station, with thousands of people in the city tuning in to listen to him.

This show is the story of how Guy came from his humble Nottinghamshire beginnings, to battling with the ego that comes with being a local celebrity.

You can tell, within moments of the show starting, that Guy is a man who was born to be on the stage.

Not every joke hits the mark, and some parts are so cringey you can’t help but laugh, but it is the confidence with which Guy delivers his material that makes him so likeable.

Guy runs through his early days at Juice, the time he pranked Simon Webbe, from Nineties pop sensations Blue, on air and why he was compelled to strip down for an interview at Glastonbury.

If you’ve ever listened to Juice - or seen Guy as his alter-ego Vince Venus (who got buzzed off Britain’s Got Talent in record time - and wanted to know more about the man behind the voice this is the show to see.

For a debut solo show at Fringe Guy puts on a fantastic performance.

But you can’t help but think that it may fall flat with an audience unfamiliar with his work.

If you want to check it out and prove me wrong Guy performs Radio Blah Blah one more time, on June 2, before the end of the Fringe.
