AN ELDERLY couple thought their romance was over when they were forced to separate because of ill health.

But, thanks to a determined daughter and the helpful staff of a care home, they have been reunited just in time for their wedding anniversary.

Sheila and James Douds first met in the 1980s in Jersey where they worked in the travel industry.

After their first meeting, they did not see each other for about 20 years until 2005 when they met unexpectedly at a church service in Surrey.

Having both been widowed, their relationship blossomed and six months later they were married.

But the couple were separated when Mrs Douds, now 86, had a stroke. At the time she was working as her husband’s carer because of his dementia.

Mr Douds, who is now 88, had to move into a care home while his wife was in hospital.

Lorraine O’Sullivan, Mrs Douds daughter, said: “It was terrible seeing the effect being apart had on them both.

“James struggled to understand what was happening so as soon as Mum was out of hospital, I wanted to try to reunite them.”

Ms O’Sullivan was set on making sure her mother and beloved husband were together for their wedding anniversary.

She said: “I was so determined they would have this special day together.

“The staff have been so supportive. Our family are so grateful for the kindness shown to them both.”

Mrs Douds moved into Beechwood Grove care home in Eastbourne shortly before Christmas and three weeks later James was able to join her.

The home helped the couple celebrate their 13th anniversary by hosting a small party when they were reunited.

Home manager Jeff Livine said: “We know how important it is for couples to stay together, so we were keen to be able to move James in as soon as possible.

“We make sure they have as much time with each other as they want.

“We help them share photographs and videos of their many trips all over the world and although they can’t now tell us how they’re feeling, we can see the calming effect it has on them both.

“Sheila is clearly thrilled to just sit and hold James’s hand. She lights up whenever he comes into the room.”
