An armed gang targeted a man as he walked in the street.

The victim was walking in Gratwicke Road near Worthing town centre when he was attacked at midday yesterday.

Police sealed off the residential street after reports of an assault near the junction with Shelley Road.

Two police cars blocked the road at each end, while officers were seen searching an area outside a block of flats.

Evidence was put inside plastic bags and taken away from the scene, while crime scene investigators also took photographs.

It was reported that a group of men attacked the victim using weapons, and police believe the victim may have been specifically targeted.

The police said: "The victim was lucky not to have received more serious injuries.

"We ask for anyone to contact police if they witnessed the attack, or if they have any information that may help us to identify those involved."
