Police, landlords and revellers are gearing up for a weekend of sporting action.

On Saturday England play South Africa in the rugby World Cup final.

Earlier in the day Brighton and Hove Albion play host to Leeds United.

Extra police will be hitting the city streets on Saturday in case of any trouble.

Superintendent Graham Bartlett said: "On Saturday, extra officers will be in Brighton providing a highly visible, tone-setting police presence in the city. We want people to attend the game at Withdean Stadium and the city centre and enjoy a happy and peaceful event.

"We aren't anticipating any problems but will be ready to deal with them should they arise. Trouble-making will not be tolerated."

Supt Bartlett said they didn't generally experience problems when rugby fixtures take place.

He said: "The difference on Saturday is that the rugby coincides with a football match in the city."

Bars are also preparing themselves for a busy Saturday night as fans hit the pubs to watch the game.

South African Shenny Bawden, 27, works at The Duke of Norfolk on Western Road, Hove.

The pub was run by South Africans until recently and it is still a popular meeting place for ex-pats.

She said: "I'm going to be managing The Duke of Norfolk for the match.

"I'm busy getting lots of flags in. I want both England and South African flags. I don't want there to be tension, it's got to be a happy event even though we're definitely going to win."

She will be decorating the pub with flags and serving South African cocktails including the Springboks shooter.

Fellow South African Jason Fendick, 32, works at Pintxo People alongside five other South Africans.

He said: "Saturday should be fun, I don't think they need any more police on the street for it. In South Africa it's football that's the more aggressive sport. Rugby is a gentleman's sport."

In 2004 violence broke out in Brighton city centre following an Albion game against Leeds.

It resulted in ten men being jailed for a total of 21 years.

Supt Bartlett said: "We are determined that this will not happen again.

"We are working closely with the licensees to ensure that they refuse to serve alcohol to those who cannot handle their drink. We will also continue to work with the football club to ensure people can enjoy the football in safety."
