BRAVE lifeboat volunteers battled against stormy waves to help a yacht in distress.

The Eastbourne RNLI team were called to the vessel off the coast of Pevensey on Friday night.

Gales and strong gusts of wind made the conditions difficult for the volunteer crew to help the yacht owner, who was reportedly in difficulty.

Video footage shows the yacht close to the beach before the RNLI arrived.

Following the rescue, crews have been praised for their efforts.

On Facebook one supporter posted: “Such bravery from a great team. Thank you all for the service you give.”

It was reported the yacht owner managed to drop anchor in time.

A RNLI spokesman said the crew was called shortly before 8pm.

The yacht was outside Pevensey Harbour and one man was on board.

The charity said: "The volunteer crew on the lifeboat towed the vessel and it’s occupant back to safety and then returned the lifeboat to the lifeboat station to be made ready for the next call."
