EDUCATION chiefs want to shut two village schools.

The plans by East Sussex County Council could see the closure of schools at Fletching and Broak Oak Community Primary near Heathfield.

They have revealed their plan, which could se the schools close by the end of next year.

Broad Oak school has 81 pupils, with a capacity of 140, and council chiefs say more than two thirds of pupils are from outside the area.

Meanwhile Fletching has 71 pupils, with a capacity of 105, and again, chiefs say a majority live outside the area.

The council’s children’s services director Stuart Gallimore said: “I understand the enormity of these proposals for pupils and their parents, school staff and communities.

“But doing nothing will not alleviate the problems these schools face, and could lead to more widespread uncertainty and difficulties for other schools.”

He will be asked to approve the plan at a meeting on June 24.
