A TEENAGER attempting to film himself spending the night in a ‘haunted’ graveyard was told to move on by police half way through.

Theo Comber, 16, from Horsham, decided to take on a 24-hour challenge where participants have to film themselves in a challenging space for the entire time without being caught.

He chose St John’s Church in the woods, known to locals as the Doomsday Church, where, according to Theo’s research, a doctor supposedly once murdered his wife and buried her remains in the nearby plague pit.

He had heard eerie rumours of a ghost of the murderous doctor visiting the churchyard - about a 15 minute walk from the main road - and thought it was a perfect location to film.

He said a couple of teenagers spent the night there and were “completely traumatised” by their experience in the graveyard, so he thought he would have a go to put on his YouTube internet channel. He set himself up on a bench in the grounds, taking in the ‘chilling’’ surroundings. But unfortunately his ghost story experience was cut short when police arrived to take him back home.

Theo, who attends Steyning Grammar School, said: “To be honest it would have been more fun to stay throughout the entire night. It was really scary. It’s a very spooky church and it’s all boarded up which makes it a bit more creepy because it’s not in use anymore.”

The dare-devil teenager managed to stick out the challenge until about 2am.

He said if he had managed to stay there longer, there is a high chance something might have happened to him.

He said: “Although I didn’t see anything particularly spooky, apart from the fact that it was a scary place in general, it was the noises that kept me on edge.

“There was also a really weird flickering green light that would shine occasionally which did make me feel a bit worried. Also hearing a car drive past, if it was a car, was scary because I couldn’t see anything, and it’s quite a far walk from a street. I was scared because I did keep thinking to myself, ‘at least I have enough signal on my phone in case something does happen and I need to call someone’.”

Theo only had two layers on and a sleeping bag with him.

He kitted himself out with some snacks and had his camera set up to record the thrilling experience.

He said: “I really wanted to stay there the whole night because I was geared up for something happening. I am definitely going to set myself another challenge, and I think I will try and do it in the same place because I honestly can’t think of anywhere more scary.

“It’s the silence that gets you.”
