THE inaugural event set up to celebrate sharing will take place today.

Brighton’s first annual Big Share will see people flocking to Hove Lawns.

The event is billed as the “grand finale” to Global Sharing Week, which took place from June 16 and ends today.

The free community event will bring the people of Brighton, Hove and beyond together to “discover, experience and celebrate” the sharing culture in the city.

It is hoped that by hosting events like this the city will become more “inclusive and caring”.

The event is organised by Brighton charity The People Who Share and The Social Society, which operates out of Hove Town Hall.

Visitors to Hove Lawns will be able to take part in a number of activities like a clothes swap, a mobile DJ booth, a sharing table and sharing hub.

Benita Matofska, founder of The People Who Share said: “Brighton and Hove has the opportunity to become a beacon for the ‘sharing’ movement.

“As The Big Share demonstrates, we have a strong sharing culture in the city and research carried out for the Generation Share, a book published for Global Sharing Week, is evidence of the social impact of the sharing economy.

“The Big Share will take us closer to becoming a ‘sharing city’, joining the most future-facing cities around the world and helping residents access the shared resources they need for their everyday lives.”

Event co-organiser Toni Finnimore said: “The Social Society has joined forces with The People Who Share to deliver this event because we have to believe that by bringing people together to share their time, skills and expertise, we help build lasting connections and to have fun while doing it.

“Ultimately, sharing helps to foster better, stronger, more sustainable communities.”

The Generation Share book was launched at Waterstones in Brighton earlier this week.

The book takes readers on a journey around the world to hear from people who are trying to improve their communities by teaching them all about sharing.

Waterstones said it is one of the most successful book launches at the store.
