Steve Kisko heads out across the South Downs above Saltdean in search of a monument which celebrates an event that took place there 200 years ago this week.

Take this short walk to explore a local landmark and enjoy the sea views along the way.

1. Start at the far northern end of a residential road called Saltdean Vale in Saltdean, near a parade of shops.

Looking north, and just after a road called Looes Barn Close on your left turn left and continue northwards along an access track which technically is a continuation of Saltdean Vale albeit non-residential.

Pass on your left Hill Park, the playing ground of Saltdean United Football Club, and carry on between paddocks.

Just beyond, reach the farm buildings of Pickers Hill Farm.

After a short bend to the right and just in front of the last farm building by a pylon turn right onto a bridleway.

2. Keep right along the edge of the field as it bends to the left and then steadily uphill.

After half a mile at the top of the hill reach a T-junction.

Turn left within the same field and follow another bridleway staying close to the fence and hedges on your right.

This stretch is more or less flat with views over to the sea on your left.

In about three-quarters of a mile the track begins to descend slightly.

Soon after this, in a clump of bushes on your left lies the historical feature of this walk, which is well worth stopping to look at.

3. Surrounded by metal fencing lies a cemetery-type cross dedicated to John Harvey who died near this spot 200 years ago this week after failing from his horse while out riding from Rottingdean.

He was aged about 48.

He was buried eight days later in Northill, Bedforshire, near to where his family owned a manor house called Ickwell Bury.

Carry along the track and in 200 yards where the track bends right upwards you carry on straight to follow a bridleway ahead leading gradually downwards.

Stay close to the right field edge by bushes.

Make your way down to a gate and continue on straight downhill into a dip and then upwards again at the field continues.

Go through a gate where a track comes in from the right and turn left uphill.

In 70 yards join a lane and turn right to follow it as it arcs left uphill.

As you climb, the notice the green roof-tiled building down to your left which is a water pumping station built in 1936.

4. In 600 yards opposite an above-ground water storage reservoir, leave the lane and turn left through a gate and head right upwards along a bridleway.

After 350 yards just beyond a dew pond take the second gate on your left into the field beyond and keep left to follow the left fence line.

In 300 yards the path becomes enclosed by bushes.

Emerge and carry on, do not leave the field but soon begin heading downhill.

Follow the left fence line.

Pass through a gate on your way down.

5. This will lead you to Pickers Hill Farm where you were earlier at point two.

Turn right and re-trace your steps from earlier, making your way down Saltdean Vale out into residential Saltdean.
