A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape in the Royal Pavilion Gardens.

Concerns were raised after a woman in distress was see running off from the area in the early hours of yesterday morning.

CCTV footage was seen, and the Royal Pavilion’s security team stepped in to detain a man.

It follows another incident of attempted rape and false imprisonment reported a fortnight ago.

Police Chief Inspector Rachel Swinney said a 36-year-old man remains in police custody following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape.

She said: “We are aware this is the second report at the same location in a relatively short space of time. Each case is being fully investigated.

“There is nothing to suggest the incidents are linked. We are working hard to establish the full circumstances in liaison with Brighton and Hove City Council.

“In the meantime, our priority is to locate the woman involved to ensure she is safe and that she receives the necessary support she needs.”

The incident happened shortly after 1am. Anyone with information should report it on 101, quoting reference 65 of 24/06.
