ARMED police swooped in and Tasered a man after he allegedly made threats to kill.

Officers were called to Coldean Lane and Lewes Road, Brighton shortly before 3pm today.

Witnesses saw the police pointing guns at a man on the ground in Wild Park.

The road was closed while police responded to the incident. 

Rosie Weller was returning home from the bus but was told she could not get by.

She said: "It was scary. I saw the police arrest the man. They had sat him down on the ground with guns pointed at him."

Meanwhile her mother Margaret Weller said: "My flat overlooks it. I saw the police with guns, so I went to get my dogs in from outside.

"I saw the armed police, but I did not see them arrest the man. I saw him on the floor."

The force says a 48-year-old man was arrested. The air ambulance was called.

In a statement the force said: "At 2.55pm on Monday officers arrested a 48-year-old man in Coldean Lane, Brighton, near the junction with Lewes Road, on suspicion of making threats to kill and affray.

"A Taser device was discharged into him in order help ensure his safe arrest without injury to police or any nearby public.

"He immediately received attention from paramedics at the scene to ensure his welfare."

There were rumours that a nearby bookmakers may have been robbed during the incident, but it is understood that these claims are false.

Meanwhile witnesses also reported seeing police searching nearby bushes for a bag the many may have been carrying.
