A MEETING hosted by police and the council will discuss ways to tackle the recent spate of antisocial behaviour in a city centre street, but many people do not know it exists.

Many people living and working in the vicinity of St James's Street in Brighton say they are unaware the meeting is taking place, with one man saying he only found out about it after stumbling across an A4 poster partially hidden on the Morrisons supermarket noticeboard.

In recent months the street has seen several homophobic attacks including one incident in which a man was admitted to intensive care ward after a violent robbery in Kemp Town.

As a result, residents have said they are pleased that the meeting is taking place, but have voiced their disappointment that it has not been better publicised.

However, a Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: "This event is part of the development of a neighbourhood action plan for Queens Park ward.

"We’ve focused publicity through local action groups and traders, as we’ve done elsewhere.

"We will use the information we gather to create a range of community priorities that will be taken to other community groups and events over the next few months."

The meeting will take place on Thursday between 10am and 12pm at the Dorset Gardens Methodist Church.

A Brighton and Hove police spokesman said: "We will be meeting with people who live and work in the St James's Street area.

"It's an opportunity for us to all work together police, the community and Brighton and Hove City Council.

"Please come along and share your ideas."
