A BUSKER came to the rescue of a newlywed couple who could not find the perfect song for their first dance.

Sophie Bassett and her husband Luke, both 32, got married last weekend at the Bandstand on Brighton seafront.

After the ceremony the newlywed pair and their guests walked along the seafront to the Fabrica Gallery, in Duke Street, for the reception.

When the couple arrived, busker Sam Tompkins was performing outside and the pair started dancing.

Sam told the couple he had a song called You’re the Love of my Life which he had always wanted to play at a wedding.

The guitarist asked them if he could play it, and they said yes.

Sophie, who is from Portslade and works at software company Breathe HR in Horsham, said: “Our booked wedding band was running about an hour and a half late.

“And we couldn’t come up with a first dance song. For months and months we were thinking about it. We didn’t really have an ‘our song’. I guess this is our song now.”

“We wanted to show Luke’s family, from Devon, what Brighton was like and that made it. It just made our big day even more special. It was perfect.”

Sam posted the video online where it has been viewed more than 45,000 times.

He said: “They shared their first dance to this song, ‘You’re the Love of my Life’.

“It was just perfect. I feel so happy every time I watch this video, so I had to share it.”

The couple met in 2014 and got engaged in December 2017.

Sophie said Sam was still playing when the couple went inside for their wedding reception and that he messaged them on social media later to congratulate them on their big day.

Luke, who works at design company TinTab proposed to Sophie on Brighton seafront and the pair then went to the Sidewinder pub in St James’s Street to celebrate with family.
