ST MARY’S Catholic Primary School hosted a When I Grow Up Day to open pupils’ eyes to possible future careers.

The careers fair saw pupils write CVs and learn about a range of different jobs from professionals in each field.

There were stalls at the event hosted by the Dogs Trust, a flight attendant, a photographer, a graphic designer, an architect, a businesswoman, an artist, a doctor, a police officer, a beautician, a sports teacher, a product engineer and university students.

It was also attended by Argus Editor Arron Hendy who talked to children about being a journalist.

Mr Hendy said: “It was an absolute joy to meet the wonderful children at St Mary’s.

“I was really pleased to be invited down and once I was there the youngsters asked me some fantastic questions.

“The budding reporter I met was particularly good at quizzing me and I think he has a bright future.”

The event looked to encourage the pupils to use the school’s seven learning skills; imagination, co-operation, stamina, logic, bravery, curiosity and memory.

Assistant headteacher Hannah Hooper said: “I know that a future career seems a long way off for most primary-aged children but we feel it’s so important for children at St Mary’s to make a connection between the skills and knowledge of what they are learning in our curriculum and how that will help them in the future.

“It’s so important to raise aspirations and broaden their minds.

“It was a really successful event and hopefully may have opened the children’s minds to a range of different career choices. We want all children to believe that anything is possible.”
