FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a suspected arson at a retail park.

Crews were called to an area behind the Argos and Sussex Beds stores in Diplocks Way, Hailsham at 9.30pm on Tuesday.

Witness Josh Meaton spotted the blaze while driving on the A22, and said it was started by two youths who were arrested.

He said: “A large fire had been started by two youths. They had set alight wood, and it then spread into a very large container full of mattresses.

“It turned into a big fire.

“We managed to call the fire brigade and police before the two boys left, and they were arrested on suspicion of starting the fire.”

Video footage from the scene shows the flames spreading.

Fire crews are seen battling the blaze which then spread to a container.

Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were at the scene in Apex Way.

The fire brigade said: "Two crews were sent to a business on Hailsham Retail Park, in Diplocks Way, at 9.30pm yesterday.

"They used one hose reel jet to tackle a fire involving two 40-foot containers, containing beds and mattresses.

"Crews left the scene an hour later. The fire was at the rear in the open and the business was not affected."

Police confirmed that a man aged 18 and a boy aged 15, present at the scene, were arrested on suspicion of arson.

But they were later released without charge.
