A LONG-STANDING weather record was smashed last night.

Many Sussex residents ditched their duvets as the day’s soaring temperatures continued into the night.

Conditions hit their peak at midnight in Brighton as the Met Office recorded temperatures of 27.8C, obliterating a nighttime record which has stood for almost 30 years.

The previous record was also recorded in Brighton on August 3 1990, when the highest minimum temperature reached 23.9C.

A Met Office spokeswoman said the temperature record for July, 36.7C recorded on July 1 2015 in Heathrow, was likely to be beaten.

She added that overall temperature record, 38.5C recorded in Faversham in 2003, was also at risk of being toppled. Temperatures in Brighton are expected to peak at 35C at 4pm tomorrow.
