TRAVEL disruptions are continuing this morning after record-breaking temperatures caused chaos this week.

Passengers are being advised to check travel as delays and cancellations to train services continued yesterday.

Trains between London Victoria and Brighton, East Grinstead and Horsham, and other services to Bognor and Littlehampton were delayed for more than an hour due to “more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time.”

On Thursday night, Brighton station was in chaos and had to close due to overcrowding.

Gates onto the platforms were shut at about 8.30pm over safety fears.

Witnesses reported seeing passengers “hurdling” over barriers in a desperate attempt to get on and off trains.

Services had been delayed or cancelled yesterday when temperatures soared.

Southern Rail said it would operate a reduced service with speed restrictions on some routes, increasing journey times, and advised passengers to “avoid travelling wherever possible.”

A Govia Thameslink Railway spokeswoman said: “We regret that yesterday’s overhead wire damage and extremely hot weather caused widespread disruption across the rail network.

“Due to Brighton station being very busy yesterday evening, we closed the station for a short period until trains became available.

“Once trains were ready to depart, the station reopened and we had a queueing system in place.

“We thank customers for their patience.”
