Here Come The Boys

Four stars

Theatre Royal, Brighton, Thursday, July 25

The heat was intense at the Theatre Royal on Thursday, and not just because of the three Strictly Come Dancing stars gracing the stage.

On the hottest day of the year Aljaž Škorjanec, Giovanni Pernice and Gorka Marquez bounded onto the stage to screams from the younger members of the audience.

But even with the high temperatures... Aljaž said he felt like a colander which how much water was dripping off him... the three dancers performed with incredibly high energy levels and put in an admirable amount of effort.

The show wasn’t as sophisticated at some of the other tours that I’ve seen involving Strictly stars but it was hugely enjoyable none the less.

The tour has given the three men who lead it the chance to break away from the hit BBC show and make a name for themselves on their own.

This was definitely a show for the younger generation.

While there were older members in the audience, we were not who this show had been catered to.

Barely a break in dances went by where there wasn’t a clamour of screams and shouts for the three men and their backing dancers.

It is wonderful to see that, in an era where terrestrial TV has been replaced with the likes of Netflix and YouTube, these youngsters still tune in to BBC to watch their heroes week in, week out.

My only criticism was the number of people who had their phones out throughout the entire show.

Again, this is a generational thing that I may never fully understand but it seems such a shame to pay to see a show and end up watching it through a handheld screen.

By the time we left the theatre it was cooler outside, which was a blessing as the heat radiating off the stage was at incredibly high levels even in a heatwave.

While it may not have been my favourite dance show it wouldn’t be fair to grade this production lowly as so many loved the performance.
