NEW plans for a leisure complex have been unveiled.

Edward Street Quarter, the redevelopment of the old Amex House site in John Street, Brighton, will have three green spaces and a huge roof terrace.

The complex, designed by First Base, is the biggest development in the city in 25 years.

Project director Steve Eccles said the company was talking to businesses in the hope of providing cafes, shops, and a cinema for the area.

He said: “We’re excited to deliver a new destination for the city’s local businesses, residents and community members to meet, socialise and ultimately enjoy what we’ve created.

“We are in talks with independent retailers, cinema providers, bars, restaurant and cafes which align with our plans to deliver a lively and attractive place to live, work, play and visit.”

New designs for the complex show three new parks on the grounds of the former office block. Coffee shops, restaurants, and bars are planned for these areas.

A roof terrace will provide open space for networking events and relaxation, as well as views of the city and the sea.

The new £120 million development will provide 168 new apartments and more than 110,000 square feet of office space.

More than 40,000 square feet of retail, food, and leisure units have also been promised.

Plans for Edward Street Quarter were approved by Brighton and Hove City Council in February last year.

Gavin Stewart, executive director of Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership, said the city is “in desperate need” of housing and office space.

He said: “This development delivers just that along with a range of additional enhancements that will support the local community to the east of Brighton for generations to come.

“It’s no secret that Brighton and Hove is in desperate need of additional housing as well as grade A office space to support many of the 16,000 businesses which exist in the city.”

The news comes as numerous other developments are tipped for Brighton.

The Circus Street development, made up of student flats, residential blocks, and a dance space, is tipped to be finished in March next year.

The Plus X building, a mix of shared workspaces and student flats, should be completed by the end of 2022.

But redevelopment of the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre was plunged into peril when contractor R Durtnell and Sons went bust on July 2.
