A JOCKEY will make history at Goodwood Racecourse today.

Khadijah Mellah will become the first female British Muslim jockey when she takes part in the Magnolia Cup horse race at the course, near Chichester.

The 18-year-old will be racing alongside the likes of Olympian Victoria Pendleton and model Vogue Williams in the all-female charity race.

Khadijah, from Peckham, south London, who has just finished her A-Levels, is preparing to study mechanical engineering at university in September.

She learned to ride at the charity Ebony Horse Club in Brixton but only sat on a racehorse for the first time in April.

Her journey from the Ebony Horse Club to one of the most famous racecourses in the world will also be the subject of a documentary film, Riding A Dream.

Khadijah will also be joined on the racecourse by Racing Post writer Kitty Trice, BBC weather presenter Alexis Green and entrepreneur and The Apprentice star Luisa Zissman.

All these inspirational women will be setting aside their day jobs to saddle up for a good cause.

The cup is the opening race on Ladies Day at Goodwood and is run over five and a half furlongs.

A crowd of more than 20,000 is expected to turn out to see the riders in action.

This year the race will support Wellbeing Of Women, a leading charity funding pioneering medical research into women’s reproductive and gynaecological health.

Wellbeing Of Women chief executive Janet Lindsay said: “This prestigious charity race stands out in its continued support for women.

“Even in an era of #MeToo with a drive to improve diversification and gender pay gaps, women’s health research remains overlooked and underfunded. We are dedicated to improving lives.”
