WHEN we go about our work we expect to be safe even though some jobs can be significantly more hazardous than others.

Take our police officers and firefighters for example, their jobs can at times be extremely dangerous but you don’t expect it to be the same scenario for the county’s postmen and women.

But it is. Across the country seven of them are attacked by dogs every day which is an alarming statistic.

Our postmen and women deserve to be able to go about their daily duties without being injured.

Obviously a lot of dogs don’t like seeing a stranger’s hand poking through the letterbox to deliver mail but there are preventative measures which can be put in place to ensure they are not in a position to injure anyone, be it a nasty nip or an injury which is far, far worse and may well need surgery to repair.

For starters, ensure the pet dog is secured in a part of the house or indeed garden where it doesn’t have access to the front door.

Alternatively you can install a specially constructed wire basket around the letter box area which ensures a dog cannot get to the postman or woman when they are putting your post through the door.

Anyone who has been bitten by a dog knows how painful it is.

Therefore it is imperative to take every possible precaution to ensure it doesn’t happen be it in a public place such as park or when they are in your own home.

It is not difficult to ensure your pet is prevented from attacking anyone.

So, let’s help keep our posties safe on their rounds.
