A "HORRIFIC" crash involving a car and a double decker bus is blocking the A259.

A witness said the front of the car had been “completely smashed off”.

They added that it was causing miles of tailbacks.

The incident happened at about 9am on the A259 in Rottingdean.

Martin Harris, managing director for Brighton and Hove Buses, said: "Our rapid response team were at the scene immediately to assist the bus driver and passengers; who were supportive and patient throughout.

"We are working very closely with the police to investigate the cause of the incident."

Emergency services attended the scene.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A Vauxhall Astra and a double decker bus were involved in a crash on the A259 at 9.06am. 

"The driver of the Astra was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment, but his injuries are not thought to be serious.

"A passenger on board the bus was reported to have suffered a cut lip, but there are currently no other reports of injuries. 

"The bus was recovered and traffic was reported to be flowing again at 11.35am. 

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any dash cam footage of the collision is asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 309 of 05/08."
