BEER drinkers in Brighton have to pay more for their beer than nearly anyone else.

New research shows the city is the second priciest place for a pint in the UK, second only to London.

The average Brightonian has to shell out £4.53 for a pint of beer, lager or ale.

Those in the capital pay a whopping £5.18.

The average price across the country is £3.70, meaning Brighton beer lovers have to pay 83p more than most.

But the news comes as no surprise to residents.

Phil Crawford, who lives in the city, said: “I’m not surprised. I’m used to paying that much for a pint now so I’m happy to pay it.”

Lukasz Strojny, who is originally from Poland but moved to Brighton six years ago, said he has noticed an increase in prices.

He said: “Prices everywhere have gone up. I used to pay under £4 for a pint when I first moved here but now I’m paying at least £4.60, sometimes more.

“I normally drink a can or two of beer at home before I go out now to keep costs down.”

Ian Rowell and Roy Read, visiting Brighton from Ipswich, said the price of beer was not much more than in their hometown.

Ian said: “I’d expect that from a tourist destination. I’d still come out for a few drinks, it doesn’t put me off.”

Roy said: “If someone drinks a lot then it will cost a lot more.”

Doug Douglas is the manager at the Saint James pub in St James’s Street where pints range from £4.50 to £5.25.

He believes that tourism and the rise of craft beer are factors in the city’s soaring pint prices.

He said: “It’s happened gradually. I blame craft beers – they’re so expensive that it’s meant everything else has gone up as well.

“And of course tourism plays its part in a city like Brighton.”

If you are looking for the cheapest drink in the UK you will have to go further afield.

Preston, in Lancashire, boasts the cheapest pint in the country – with the average price of £3.06.

Perth, in Scotland, Sunderland, Liverpool and Stoke make up the top five list of cheapest places to drink in Britain.

Research has also found the most and least expensive places for a drink around the world.

The most expensive cities across the globe for a pint are Doha, in Qatar, where it costs £10.30, and Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, where you will pay £9.92 for one drink.

At the other end of the scale, the Mozambique capital of Maputo offers pints for 39p and for just three British pence more you would also be able to buy a pint in Caracas, Venezuela.

The survey, which was carried out by Finder, also discovered the average cost of a pint in the UK is £1.20 more than the global average of £2.50.
