A 24-YEAR-OLD man has died after being hit by a heavy object which fell from a crane working on an 18-storey building.
The workman died at the scene at around 11.20am.
An air ambulance was called to help after the accident in Bolsover Road, Eastbourne.
The road was closed and has been cordoned off by police with tape.
The coroner's office is also at the site of the incident.
A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "At 11.20 this morning we sent three response cars and an ambulance to Bolsover Road, Eastbourne to attend a man seriously injured.
"This was caused by a falling heavy object.
"The air ambulance also attended."
Sussex Police also attended the scene.
A spokesman said: "Police were called to a report of a man who had suffered serious injuries after being hit by a heavy object which had fallen from a crane in Bolsover Road, Eastbourne, at about 11.20am.
"The workman, aged 21, sadly died at the scene in South Cliff Tower despite efforts by paramedics and other emergency responders.
"His next of kin have been informed and the road remains closed while the incident was being dealt with."
The Health and Safety Executive have been informed.
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said it is aware of the incident and is currently assisting police.
Representatives from contractor CBG Construction, which is responsible for the project, said company directors are currently at the scene of the incident.
