AN MP says gun and knife crime must not be allowed to become a day-to-day part of city life, as a suspected shotgun shooter remains at large.

Police were called to East Drive in Queen’s Park, Brighton, on Sunday night after shots were fired.

Residents heard loud bangs, and shotgun shells were scattered around the street.

On Monday, armed officers swooped on an address in Birdham Road in Moulsecoomb, but the suspect was not there.

Now six days on, he has still not been apprehended, and no images or description of the suspect has been released.

Police say those involved in the shooting are known to one another, and said: “There is no information to suggest a risk to the wider public at this time.”

But Argus readers have expressed their fears, and as the hunt entered its sixth day, Brighton Kemptown MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle shared his concerns.

He said: “I do not know the full circumstances of the incident, but it is imperative the police reassure the public that they are doing everything they can, and that they involve the public in the search if the public can aid them.

“People are probably shocked about an armed gunman on the loose.

“I do not want to condemn the police, if they think issuing an image might make the man flee, then they may be holding those details to be clever.

“They do need to ensure the public are on board, to ensure that this situation is resolved.”

For now the Labour MP said if the situation continues, he will seek updates from officers in charge.

He added: “I hope this was just a one-off. It is concerning that knife crime and drugs incidents seem to be happening more regularly.

“We must not allow it to seep into our day-to-day discourse of what happens in this city.”

Superintendent Julia Pope said: “We know this incident involved individuals known to one another and there is no information to suggest a risk to the wider public at this time.

“Public safety is our priority and additional high visibility patrols have been deployed in the area to provide reassurance.”
