A VILLAGE fair has been cancelled today due to the weather.

Stewards have been seen scrambling around trying to catch flying gazebo's in Firle, near Lewes, where the Firle Vintage Fair was supposed to be taking place today.

The annual event started yesterday, in glorious sunshine, and was due to run throughout the weekend until tomorrow.

Stall-holder Kathy Ballard said some tents have been left set up from Friday and staff at the fair are trying their best to keep them to the ground.

"I have to say that the stewards were really trying hard to get something (anything) under control," she said.

"They were very polite and calm to traders even though the conditions were, and still are appalling."

The Argus:

While visitors flocked to the fair yesterday, the weather started to cause issues in the afternoon.

One stall-holder said the wind started to pick up so much it took her gazebo with it.

The Argus:

She said: "We had a scary incident during the Sand Art workshop on Friday afternoon when our well secured gazebo was lifted in the air with all its weights and ropes nailed into the ground.

"It's amazing that some children didn’t stop their colouring and some were amused by the experience.

"No injuries thanks goodness apart from a damaged gazebo."

While the event has been called-off today, the fair is still set to run tomorrow, weather permitting.

"We are very disapointed as you are to be making this decision but safety is our top priority for everyone involved.

"People who have brought tickets for today will be able to use them tomorrow on Sunday, the weather is meant to be a lot better.

"Many Thanks, Firle Vintage Fair."
