A SUSPECTED gunman has been released on police bail.

Officers were called to East Drive in Queen’s Park on August 4 after shots were fired.

Residents reported hearing loud bangs, and saw shotgun shells on the floor.

Armed officers swooped on an address in Birdham Road, Moulsecoomb on August 5, but the suspect was not there.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and failing to comply with a shotgun licence, she was released on bail.

Finally on Saturday a 21-year-old man was apprehended in Croydon with the help of the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

Police also arrested a 22-year-old woman from Brighton and a 24-year-old man from East Grinstead on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been released pending further enquiries.

The 21-year-old has now been released on strict bail terms until September 5.

Superintendent Julia Pope said: “Arrests have been made following extensive enquiries and I thank the public for their understanding in this sensitive policing operation.

“The incident involved individuals known to one another and although there was no information to suggest a risk to the wider public, we have ensured additional high visibility patrols in the area to provide reassurance.”

Supt Pope said house to house enquiries have been made, and said the force is continuing to appeal for information.
