A YOUNG man who died when he was hit by a train at a level crossing will have a day of fundraising held in his memory.

Tommy Ramshaw was on a night out in Shoreham when he tried to cross the line in Brunswick Road while the barriers were down.

But, as he approached the other side, the 20-year-old was hit by a train.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and Tommy was taken away in an ambulance.

But he was pronounced dead on his way to the hospital.

The accident happened in February 2016.

Since Tommy’s death, his mother Jeanette Compton has set up a charity with the purpose of supporting families who have lost a child aged between 18 and 30.

Jeanette said she set up the charity “in loving memory of Tommy Ramshaw, our king of Shoreham”.

She said: “My son Tommy Ramshaw was tragically killed on the way home from a night out.

“Tommy’s Fund aims to support families that lose an older child aged 18 to 30 suddenly by accident, suicide or murder.”

Jeanette said there was help for husbands and wives who had lost their partners.

She said: “There is no financial help out there for mothers or families – who are on a low income but are not on benefits – who lose their older children.”

The charity has raised thousands of pounds for several small charities and Sussex families since it was set up three years ago.

Jeanette has also worked to encourage people to use the railway safely.

In an interview with British Transport Police she said: “He went out that night and he never came home.

“He was just out enjoying himself like any other Friday and I never ever expected him not to come home because he made a stupid decision that night to cross through the railway barriers while they were down.

“The next thing I know I have got police knocking on my door asking if Tommy Ramshaw lived there.

“They came through the door and said he’s gone.

“I don’t want anybody else to go through this.

“Don’t get complacent and don’t think that just because you have an older child they will do the right thing.”

The Family Fun Day 2019 Tommy’s Fund event will take place on Saturday to raise money for the charity.

It will be held in Buckingham Park, Shoreham, between 10am and 4pm.

Visitors will have the chance to go on fairground rides, learn circus skills, take part in a dog show and try vegan pies and sausage rolls.

This year’s event will raise money for Jamie’s Star, a Crowdfunder campaign set up to raise funds to support the family of Jamie Bray.

The 31-year-old from Hove died last month, just three months before the birth of his son Noah.

On the Crowdfunder page, a statement from the family says they are aiming to collect enough money to give Jamie “the send off he deserves” and also thanked all those who had donated to the cause for their support.

The campaign aims to raise £5,000 and, on Tuesday morning, it had raised more than £1,250 with 80 supporters having donated.
