But the number of students who achieved A and A* grades has fallen to the lowest level in more than a decade, national figures show.
More than 300,000 students picked up their results with 25.5 per cent earning the top marks - the lowest percentage since 25.3 per cent achieved the grades in 2007.
Last year 26.4 per cent achieved an A or A* result.
Following a national push to encourage girls to study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, girls reclaimed the title of most A and A* grades.
There were also more entries for A-level science subjects from girls than there were from boys, making this the first time this has been the case.
