IT COMES every year, but commuters are still not used it.

Yesterday’s announcement about the cost of rail season tickets increasing by a maximum of 2.8 per cent will come as a disappointment for many.

As if getting to work is not expensive enough already, an annual ticket from Brighton to London Victoria could cost £125 more next year.

The Government has declared a climate emergency, yet it is making public transport more and more unattractive to commuters.

No wonder CO2 emissions have increased in the transport sector – taking the train takes a huge chunk out of your income compared with driving.

Whether you are for or against trains being brought back into public ownership, it is clear ticket prices are far too high. Public transport may not always be enjoyable, but when done right it is far more convenient than driving.

We must take the environment into consideration, too.

If, as the UN claimed, we only have 11 years to stop irreversible damage being done to our planet, then the Government needs to take swift action to make public transport cheaper and more reliable.

Whether that means reducing rail prices, freezing season ticket costs, or even nationalising the rail, Boris Johnson must

make public transport attractive again.

Better and cheap trains mean easier commutes, less pollution and fewer traffic jams. They should be a major focus of Mr Johnson’s Government.

Until then, commuters will have to stomach expensive tickets and unreliable service.

Let us hope action is taken soon.
