“IF YOU were to invent a beer city then it would be Brighton and Hove.”

That’s the view of Emma Inch, founder and organiser of the city’s second annual Beer Week.

She said that though the sunshine can’t be guaranteed, the vibrant music scene and diverse community make Brighton the perfect place to celebrate the brewed beverage.

This year more than 25 pubs, bars and restaurants are offering ten days of activities including “tap takeovers”, treasure hunts, new beer launches and live music.

Starting tomorrow and running until Sunday, September 1, the Beer Week – which is actually ten days – promises to be a beer festival with a twist with “no wristbands, no lanyards and no central beer tent”.

There are currently seven breweries in Brighton and Hove which brew within the city – Brighton Bier, Hand Brew Co, Loud Shirt, UnBarred, North Laine Brewhouse, the Watchmakers Arms and The Urchin.

To celebrate Beer Week, the seven specialists will join forces and create a “one-off collaboration beer” which will be launched on the opening day of the event.

Ms Inch said: “The special thing about the Beer Week is that it comes from the very heart of the city’s beer community, the venues and breweries that bring you great beer all year round.

“The city’s beer scene continues to go from strength to strength and the beer week is a great way to showcase this to both locals and visitors.

“This is a venue-led event featuring world-class beer served exactly where it should be – in the pubs, bars, restaurants and bottle shops that bring it to you all year round.

“There are no wristbands and no central beer tent, it’s just an opportunity to explore the city and support some great local businesses.

“Even if you don’t think you like beer, get out there and see what’s happening. I’m convinced there’s something for everyone.”

Despite this, beer is definitely central to many of the event’s attractions with Ms Inch saying it would create a “whole city full of great beer”.

Activities which will be hosted in participating pubs include a beer breakfast at The Independent in Queen’s Park Road, Hanover, and a dance extravaganza at The Bevy in Hillside, Bevendean.

Several pubs and restaurants have also put together their own programmes of “beer-based events” which will “highlight the very best things about drinking beer in the city”.
