IT IS clear Southern Water needs to do more to regain the trust of its customers across Sussex.

The fact a criminal investigation into the company has been launched by the Environment Agency will not inspire confidence in those who rely on it.

Sewage spills caused by power cuts in Newhaven and Eastbourne have been met with fierce criticism from residents and public figures.

Swimmers in Eastbourne and Pevensey must have been angry after beaches were closed in July because of a spill from the company’s wastewater treatment plant.

And the company’s eye-watering £126 million fine by industry regulator Ofwat inspired a tirade by Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas, who branded Southern Water the “worst-performing water company in years”.

Not to mention the water shortages that affected thousands in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean.

Whether you are for or against the water supply being in private hands, anyone can sympathise with campaigners’ calls for the company to sort out its affairs.

Customers should feel safe knowing they have a reliable supplier of water that will not spill sewage into the sea.

Let us hope the Environment Agency conducts a thorough and proper investigation into the company.

Confidence must be restored in our water supply as it is an essential utility for all households.

With environmental issues coming to the forefront, the public must have full confidence in how our water is managed.

If shortages come, we need to know our essential supplies are in safe hands, whether that is with Southern Water or someone else.
