FIREFIGHTERS battled for hours to bring a field fire under control.

The crews from Worthing and Steyning were called to a wheatfield where stubble had caught fire.

Flames stretched across as many as ten acres at the site in Muntham, West Sussex.

The crews had to call for a water carrier to be brought to the scene to bring the fire under control.

At first the fire was reported at 10.30pm last night.

Two fire engines were sent to the area, and were supported by fire brigade Land Rover vehicles from Horsham.

Pictures from the scene show the firefighters tackling the blaze.

A fire service spokesman said: "We received the call just before 10.30pm.

"It was possibly a hectare of stubble which was alight from the crop before ploughing.

"Crews from Steyning and Worthing attended, with a Land Rover from Horsham.

"By 11.15pm several acres were alight. The crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

"Before midnight they left the scene, after extinguishing up to ten acres of stubble."
