FROM port battered mackerel to good old cod and chips, our chippies are the best in the country.

But which is your favourite?

Votes are now being taken for The Argus Chip Shop of the Year Awards 2019, with 22 fish and chip shops competing to win.

Fish and chip vendors from around the city and across Sussex are among the nominations, including Lewes Fish Bar and Big Fish in Steyning.

Wolfies of Hove is on the list, alongside Chip Basket, The Sea Horse and Ramsbottoms Fish and Chips, also both in Hove.

Danny Keston has been running Wolfies for five and a half years with his father Dave, and the pair pride their family-run business on the quality of their ingredients and inventive weekly specials.

Danny said: “We use a mixture of fish from Billingsgate as well as locally caught fish, and our potatoes are locally sourced.

“Our pies are all handmade and we do a weekly special, which could be anything from gin and tonic battered scallops to jerk-marinated red snapper.”

Wolfies of Hove is next to The Watchmaker’s Arms micropub in Goldstone Villas, and often uses its beers for different batter flavourings.

“We have done a special with mackerel in a dark port batter in the past,” Danny said.

“We’re also very popular for our gluten free batter, which is a big selling point.”

Bardsley’s of Baker Street, Brighton, is one of the oldest chip shops on the list – the family-run business has been frying fish since 1926.

Ben Bardsley was a blacksmith from Lancashire who moved to Brighton during the Great Depression to establish the business and the Baker Street chip shop is owned by his direct descendants.

Meanwhile, the Central Fish Shop at Telscombe Cliffs and Woodingdean Fish Bar are also nominees.

Stephen Papadopoulos, a partner at Woodingdean Fish Bar, said: “We have always said that we have one of the best fish and chip shops around Brighton, and our customers agree.

“Our batter is one of the best, and we have a secret ingredient.”

“Besides fish and chips we do a variety of vegetarian options, such as spring rolls, veggie burgers and veggie sausages.”

Voting is on until Friday, September 13.
