A LARGE group of travellers have been moved on from a public field.

The group, which had set up camp on Martello Field in Seaford, were served with a Section 61 notice by Sussex Police and Seaford Town Council.

The travellers arrived at the field along with about 25 motorhomes and campervans yesterday evening but had left the site by 4pm today - less than 24 hours after they arrived.

The group are believed to be linked to a group of travellers which occupied Hove Lawns for more than two days over the weekend before being moved on yesterday.

In a statement issued at about 4.15pm today, a Seaford Town Council spokesman said there have been some acts of vandalism in the area.

He said: "Seaford Town Council is in a position to announce that with thanks to the diligent work of Town Council Officers and the magnificent support of Sussex Police the Travellers have been served with a Section 61 notice and have vacated and left the Martello Field.

"Many thanks also go to people who reported incidents to police, and for residents' tolerance during this period.

"There has been some vandalism in the area which may of may not be connected but will be repaired.

"Equally, council staff will be clearing the field shortly, which is not as bad as feared.

"The town council will review what can be learnt from this experience but ideas of leaving concrete blocks permanently in situ will not work as access is needed to the fields several times per week by machinery for maintenance and the 40 plus events there every year.

"But the council would be interested to hear from any resident with access to a Hi Ab who could at short notice move some concrete blocks to cover the gates. The council does have the concrete blocks."
