VIOLENCE has erupted tonight as gangs of youths armed with weapons have been caught brawling in the street.

A dispersal order has been authorised across Newhaven town centre and police patrols have been dispatched after the gangs caused chaos this afternoon.

Police were first called to Newhaven High Street to reports of groups of youths fighting with weapons in the street.

According to reports widely circulating online, one youth was seen with a hammer.

But police, who took three hours to release a statement, say no weapons have been located at the scene.

More fighting then erupted between the gangs in other parts of the town - with a number of injuries reported.

A section 35 order has been issued to prevent further carnage.

Under the order, police officers and PCSOs can tell individuals or groups, who are causing significant and persistent anti-social behaviour to leave the area and not return for up to 24 hours.

Inspector Jo Webb said: "Police have received a number of reports of disorder concerning youths in Newhaven.

"To curb this behaviour a dispersal order is now in place and high visibility patrols will be conducted."
