READING the Argus coverage of the brief encampment of traveller camper vans and caravans on Hove Lawns on the weekend and the public outrage and so-called fury of Councillor Barnett, I think many people are not looking at the full picture here.

They are called Travellers for a reason.

They had no intentions of living on the Lawns for any real period of time, they had merely set up for what is normally their few days in one place, before they would move on to their next brief surroundings.

Why are so many people so intolerant and angry at other humans so quickly?

They don't pay council tax?

So what, they don't hang around in the area too long to enjoy, or should I say, get frustrated at the provision of services that tax is meant to support.

They always leave a mess. Yes, they normally do, but it's not a big deal to clear it up is it?

It's their way of life and who are we to change that.

They are normally on public land, that to me says all public, not just council tax payers.

For a few days, members of the public couldn't sit on the Lawns and burn rectangular shapes into the grass with their disposable barbecues or play a game of football, big deal.

The council should have an officer attend a traveller site immediately, chat about having a verbal agreement that they are gone in 48 hrs, provide portable toilets, wheelie bins and anything else reasonably requested, maybe a water supply.

Seeing their vans on the lawns is no more of an eyesore than the Circus lorries five minutes further along.

We get used to seeing The Ladyboys of Bangkok or Zippos parked up on our grass areas once a year, what's the big deal about the Travellers?

Live and let live.
