A RAILWAY station remains closed after thieves broke in.

Police cordoned off Hassocks station after reports of a raid earlier this morning.

It is understood that there is a cash machine inside the station, but it is not known if anything was stolen in the raid.

The station building has been closed after glass doors were damaged, and images show rail staff clearing up the mess.

British Transport Police said: "Our officers are currently investigating a burglary at Hassocks station.

"It was reported to us at 4.08am. Officers are currently determining what, if any, items were taken during the burglary."

Southern Rail confirmed there was a break-in.

The company said: "We hope to reopen Hassocks ticket office later today.

“Train services are running as normal and tickets are still available to buy from machines on each platform."

The police say that anyone with information or who witnessed what happened should text 61016 or call 0800 405040 and quote reference 57 of 05/09.
