I BEG to differ with Gordon White (Argus 4/9) regarding New Age Travellers.
To suggest that these people are not a nuisance is farcical.
These travellers lead this lifestyle to avoid paying taxes. Yet they are quite happy to enjoy the benefits society pays for.
The land they occupy is invariably maintained by local authorities, farmers or other land owners.
To imply that it does not cost much to clear up behind them is untrue. Many local beauty spots have been left resembling rubbish tips, open lavatories or have been seriously damaged when these people finally leave.
In the past people were actually filmed digging up bushes to gain access to a park. These bushes were planted by local volunteers.
Yet- no prosecution was forthcoming.
I wonder how many of these people are local?
The Green party in Brighton and Hove sent a message that they would be more tolerant to Travellers with the result that this problem has ‘snowballed’.
