A LEFT-WING Labour faction has backed proposals to end detention of immigrants, The Argus can reveal.

The Momentum pressure group, was created in 2015 after Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the party.

Documents seen by The Argus show the group will propose at this month’s Labour Conference to close down all immigration detention centres in the UK, including Brook House near Gatwick Airport, pictured right.

The motion was written by the Labour Against Racism and Fascism group, which Momentum backs

At the conference, which begins at the Brighton Centre on September 21, Labour members will decide on party policy.

Momentum’s proposal to end immigration detention says: “By criminalising migrants, the Conservatives are stoking anti-immigration sentiment to set a far-right policy agenda.”

The motion called for Labour to adopt a “community-based” approach to immigration without detaining them.

It says: “Those seeking to settle can do so whilst remaining in the country, working within their local communities and receiving legal advice.”

Another Momentum-backed motion called for a Labour government to take over public services, including trains and water companies, and make them “democratic and accountable”.

It added Labour should create a new public body to “prevent future privatisation attempts” and hold companies to account.

A third motion drafted by Momentum said Labour should force all companies with more than 250 employees to spend one per cent of its shares each year on bonuses for its workers.

The scheme, labelled “Inclusive Ownership Funds”, would require qualifying businesses to pay its employees yearly dividends up to a cap, then paying the rest to the Government.

Momentum also proposed endorsing “community wealth building” for councils.

The motion called the move a “proven remedy” to austerity measures.
