PASSERS-BY were shocked as a large scaffolding tower collapsed next to a block of flats.

The structure was left leaning precariously against a nearby tree shortly before midnight.

Police and fire services were called and quickly cordoned off the roads surrounding Allfrey Road in Eastbourne.

The Argus:

But fire services were unable to take the structure down and so a scaffolding company was called urgently.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 11.39pm on September 9.

“Firefighters from Eastbourne attended a residential property in Allfrey Road, Eastbourne, after reports of a dangerous structure. Scaffolding had collapsed.

The Argus:

“Crews were not able to dismantle the scaffolding safely so it was secured and police were requested to cordon off the surrounding roads.

“Advice was given to residents and a scaffolding company was asked to attend urgently, before rush hour the following day.

“The scene was made safe. No one was injured.”
